Artisans & Impact

zdaryn quilts are hand-stitched by women artisans in Bangladesh, using Nakshi Kantha –
a 500-year-old embroidery tradition where stories are sewn into cloth. This page shares the people, stories and impact behind every blanket you gift.

A mother’s stitches are blessings you can hold

Long ago, in a quiet village room beside an oil lamp, a mother gathered her soft, worn saris – cloth that held her memories. She layered the fabric, began the smallest stitches and, with every pull of the thread, she whispered to her child: Be safe. Be strong. Be loved. When the quilt was finished, she wrapped her child and realised something simple and true: Love, turned into art, is the most meaningful gift of all. Azdaryn exists to honour that same love today – and to protect the women, skills and stories behind each stitch.

Nakshi Kantha: love stitched into cloth

Nakshi Kantha is a traditional Bengali embroidered quilt – soft cotton layers held together by thousands of tiny running stitches. For generations, mothers and grandmothers in Bangladesh stitched kanthas from old saris to keep babies warm, welcome guests and send daughters into marriage with something
made by hand.

It is:
● Practical comfort – a blanket you can use every day.
● A usable heirloom – a piece of family story you can hold.

When you choose an Azdaryn quilt, you’re helping keep this 500-year tradition alive.

One quilt, 9–10 women

Every Azdaryn quilt is made by a small circle of women working together. Your order doesn’t support just one artisan – it supports a whole team.

For a single custom quilt, your purchase usually supports:

● Design lead – plans the layout and story of your quilt.
● Fabric cutter & piecer – prepares and layers the cotton.
● Sketch artist – draws your chosen motifs, name and date.
● 3–4 embroiderers – hand stitch the motifs, borders and background.
● “Colour aunty” – an experienced mother who guides thread colours and balance.
● Supervisor / quality lead – keeps the rhythm, spacing and finishing consistent.
● Finisher & packer – trims, washes, presses and folds your quilt for gifting.

One meaningful quilt = work and income for around 9–10 women – plus the daughters watching and learning beside them.

One quilt. Three lives.

Maker

A skilled woman earns fair, dignified hourly income from home. This helps her feed her family, send children to school and keep a living heritage craft alive.

Giver (you)

You don’t just tick a box on a shopping list. You give something personal, handcrafted andmeaningful. Every time they see the quilt, they’ll remember that you chose a gift with a story.

Receiver

The family feels seen and loved. Their child is wrapped in something created just for them –
name, date, motifs and all – not another generic baby item.

Our mission
one meaningful gift at time

● Preserves a heritage craft – Nakshi Kantha, passed from mother to daughter.
● Creates real work for women – flexible, hourly income for artisans in rural Bangladesh.
● Reduces gift waste – replacing forgettable, mass-made products with something personal, practical and meant to be kept.

We believe one meaningful gift can change the world, because each quilt does three things at once

One quilt. Three lives.

Custom Story Quilt

● Supports around 9–10 women in a stitching circle.
● Provides flexible paid work from home.

Custom Baby Blanket

● Supports around 6–7 women on a smaller team.
● Often the first project for a younger apprentice stitcher.

3 Quilts in a Year (for your family & friends)

● Can spread work to 25–30 women across different groups.
● Helps us bring new villages and new artisans into the program.

Numbers are approximate, but they reflect how we structure our teams – with design,
cutting, sketching, embroidery, colour guidance, supervision and finishing on every piece.

Real women. Real stitches.

Nasima – Jamalpur, Bangladesh

“Before I started stitching with Azdaryn, I had no income of my own. Now I can work from home and earn with dignity. My stitching helps pay for my child’s school costs and daily needs. When I finish a piece and know it’s going to an Australian home, I feel proud—like a part of my story is travelling with it.”

Rabeya – Noakhali, Bangladesh

“I stitch from home, so I can care for my family and still earn. This work gives me independence and confidence—I’m not asking anyone for money. Every order makes me feel respected, because someone values my hands and my time. When I see the finished piece, I feel proud knowing it will be used and kept for years.”

Nasima – Jamalpur, Bangladesh

“Nakshi Kantha is part of our heritage. When I stitch, I feel connected to the women before me who taught these skills. Now my work supports my family—and I’m teaching my daughter & niece so the craft doesn’t disappear. Knowing my stitching becomes a gift in Australia makes me feel proud: our tradition is being seen and valued.”

When you order a quilt, these are the faces behind it – not a factory line, but a circle of
women and girls sharing skill, income and pride.

How we work with our artisan partners

Fair hourly pay

We pay artisans by the hour rather than per piece, so detailed designs don’t reduce their income.

Flexible, home-based work

Most women stitch from home or in small neighbourhood groups, fitting work around childcare and family life.

Long-term relationships

We work with the same groups season after season, so they can plan ahead and
train the next generation.
